Gilgit in the centre of Gilgit-Baltistan province, is the capital of the province and the starting point for trips to the Gilgit and Hunza Valleys, which run west and north respectively and lies on the Karakoram Highway, the modern road following a branch of the fabled Silk route between China and the West.
